When it comes to tree care, there's hardly anything more important than the way you prune your trees.

Unfortunately, many don't know where to start, or even when it's time for some tree trimming.

That's why we're going to review the six signs its time to prune your trees.

    1. Overgrowth

Have you noticed that your trees have been looking bulky lately? Then it's probably time for some tree trimming.

Trees with overgrown branches not only harm the aesthetic of your lawn but poses a safety issue.

If you wait too long to prune your trees, one of these branches could snap off and hit someone or something.

This could include powerlines, houses, or worst-case scenario, a person.

    2. Dead Branches

Dead branches are more than unsightly - they're bad for the tree. If left untreated, the tree will become riddled with pests and diseases.

If you don't practice tree pruning, your trees will not grow properly. That's why it's important to choose a trusted arborist who is skilled at tree care and tree removal.

    3. Recent Storm

In the south, trees are susceptible to wind, lightning, and rainstorms. Depending on its severity, the storm could damage your trees. Flooding is also a risk.

Damage from lightning could be as minor as a few broken pieces of bark, to as serious as the trunk exploding.

Floods may loosen the soil and upend the roots so they are no longer secure in the ground. Lastly, windstorms have the power to distort or break branches.

In the case of harsh storms, you may have to go to a professional for stump grinding and tree removal.

    4. Criss-Cross Branches

Though it may not seem like a big deal, crossing branches may be a sign of decay. This decay can spread to other trees if you don't contact an arborist to take care of your tree trimming needs.

    5. The Tree is Too Big

There isn't inherently any problem with big trees, but make sure you keep a close eye on them.

Beautiful as they may be, big trees may be hiding rot or diseases. To check for these issues, inspect the trunk for insect holes. If you have a large, rotting tree, opt for tree removal.

    6. Cracks and Deadwood

Cracks and deadwood are two signs it's time to prune your trees.

Although a tree with cracks is sick or dying, you may be able to extend its life by cutting the branches.

Follow a similar procedure for deadwood, cutting off branches that have too much of it. Otherwise, you'll have to remove the tree.
